Chapter fourteen
~ Frank ~
Iwould have done anything, suggested marriage again and again, if it would get me the same look that I got from Amber. Her surprise was easy to see, and so was her worry. She looked from Ethan to me, and if I didnât know any better, she was warning me to stop now with her eyes.
I didnât want to stop, though. I wanted to keep going, but just because Ethan was here, it didnât mean anything. He wanted me to marry Amber. I know how he felt about her, how he talked about her, and how my son brightened up whenever she was around. Amber brought life back to Ethan when I wasnât sure it would happen. I could never forget or negate that.
âYou shouldnât say things like that, Frank. People might think youâre being serious instead of just joking around.â
I donât know who these âpeopleâ were that she was talking about. Was she worried about Ethan, or was it herself that didnât believe me? I needed her to see that I wasnât joking around. I needed her, and hearing the two of them talking, my son making such a suggestion, it all fell into place in my head. Why was my young son more intelligent than his father? He saw what I should have seen long before.
âI said it because I mean it. I do think that the two of us should get married. You have to know how I feel about you. I have failed magnificently in trying to keep my feelings from you. I know that you have to know that I love you.â
Could that be true? Could she not see that I was dying inside for her? It was frustrating to think that. I was so wrapped up in myself that it was painful to focus on much of anything else.
I shut my mouth a bit when her declaration didnât follow. What did I think she was going to say? Was I convinced that she would go along with it and say yes? Sadly, that's probably exactly what I thought. I had built it up so much that there was no other choice but for her to agree to my proposal. Just like she knew how I felt about her, I was sure I knew how she felt about me. There was room for failure, though; now she had me questioning everything.
Amber was right about some things. Here Ethan was, soaking it all up, and it was then that I realized that I probably shouldn't be doing this right now. I thought she didn't want Ethan to be exposed to something he wasn't ready for, but it wasn't that. I had a feeling that Amber did not want me to be embarrassed when she told me no. That was different from the way I saw this going or wanted it to go. I wanted Amber to see how much she meant to me. I never considered that I might not mean the same to her.
